The Stroget – Copenhagen

Posted on 25 October 2007

But it is not any specific sight that conveys hygellig: it is the comfortable ambience of even the least expensive restaurants, it is the friendliness of the Danes at cafes and bars, it is the willingness of desk clerks and shopkeepers to assist foreigners. In strolling through this photogenic city of modern convenience and medieval monuments you are surrounded by centuries of ease and beauty. More significantly, you are surrounded by people who are friendlier than anywhere else in the world.

The Stroget copenhagen        The Stroget (a large shopping, walking area) is full of shoppers, lovers, window-shoppers and tourists. You can seek fine Danish porcelain, compare exquisite amber and silver jewelry or blow your budget on furs or Nordic knitwear. You can sit and sip Danish beer and watch the crowds drift past. If you are interested in shopping for exclusively Danish prizes, glassware, silver and stainless steel in the designs for which the Danes are justly famous are good options. Amber jewelry is less expensive and available in far more design options than anywhere else.

On a clear day you can appreciate the majesty of Copenhagen from the water as part of a 45 minute ferry-trip to Malmo. As you speed across the technicolor-blue water, you follow the route navigated by hundreds of Danish citizens evacuating their Jewish countrymen during the Nazi occupation. Malmo offers some small museums, excellent shopping (particularly for Swedish jewelry) and a quick taste of a different Scandinavian country.
