Tivoli - Copenhagen

Posted on 22 October 2007

Tivoli Tower CopenhagenFrom the entertainment smorgasbord of Tivoli amusement park—which contains everything from fairground rides to ballet—to the peaceful glow of sundown as you sip an excellent beer in a sidewalk cafe in Nyhavn (the harbor area), Copenhagen never fails to enchant. The famed statue of Hans Christian Anderson’s little mermaid is a fitting logo for a magical city. Walking down the north side of Nyhavn, there is a glorious view across the inner harbor. Bearing left you will pass through a wooden colonnaded archway into the square of Amalienborg Palace; the queen lives in the wing to your right, next to the colonnade. Continue north along Amaliegade to the junction of Esplanaden and you will pass by the Museum of the Danish Resistance, St. Alban’s Church and the Gefion Fountain. From the dramatic display of the goddess Gefion and her sons, follow the signposts north to Langelinie where the huge ocean liners moor. You will pass through a succession of flower beds, statues and monuments until you come upon the renowned little mermaid waiting to greet you. This is only one of the wonderful walks through the fairyland of the north.
