Hints for wine lovers: Local wines are usually available in decanters of 2,3 and 5 decis, (deci-liters); the 5-deci size gives a small glass each to five people. Try to drink the wines of the region you are visiting. From the eastern regions: Lake Zurich and surrounding areas, the Thurgau, Schaffhausen and Lake Constance areas, plus the Alpine valley of the Rhine, hail red, white and rose wines that are light and subtle. The Ticino calls its rich reds Nostrano and Merlot del Ticino. Swiss wines, while not available in large quantities for export, are surprisingly delightful.
Add cheese fondue or raclette, (a cheese dish of melted cheese on boiled potatoes or bread) for a snack or lunch.
