Saxon Tower – For only one pound twenty you can climb

Posted on 09 October 2007

For only one pound twenty you can climb the Saxon Tower and obtain a startling view of the city. This is the view of Oxford’s rooftops that you must photograph. Additionally you will find a friendly helpful staff at the church. They will be happy to answer questions about the church or direct you to your next designation.

Walking tours (with Official Guides) meet at the Saxon Tower at 1:45 PM most days. For those that enjoy audio-visual "time travel" tours the Oxford Story at 6 Broad Street can fill you in on area history.

Just around the corner from the church, The Nose Bag offers hearty filling meals. The restaurant is up-stairs and smoke-free. Numerous area pubs offer standard pub grub. However, down St. Giles Street from St. Michael’s lovers of well-prepared fare and fans of the movie Shadowlands must visit the Eagle and Child. Serving lunch only, the pub, dating from 1650 and frequented by Lewis and Tolkien, offers cooked to order lunches and a range of ale. This is a student town; many pubs do not serve food in the evening.
